FAQs
Wegovy is a prescription medication that was approved by the FDA in June 2021 to treat obesity in adult patients. It is a brand name for the prescription drug Semaglutide, which is exactly the same medication used to treat type 2 diabetes under the brand name Ozempic. The only difference between the two is that Wegovy is administered in higher doses than Ozempic.
Our bodies naturally manufacture the hormone GLP-1, which is responsible for regulating blood sugar by triggering the release of insulin from the pancreas. Wegovy mimics the natural GLP-1 hormone and works with the digestive system to help regulate the release of insulin as well as delay the digestion process so the stomach remains full for a longer period of time.
Wegovy can also act as an appetite suppressant for the patient and help their metabolism run more efficiently. It is meant to be used as a tool to help further the patient’s weight loss efforts. When used in tandem with patient efforts, it has been proven to help patients lose weight and keep it off when combined with a healthy, low-calorie diet and regular exercise.
Patients take Wegovy through subcutaneous injections administered on the same day and around the same time of day once a week.
The Wegovy shot is given in the fatty part of the skin on the abdomen, upper arm, or thigh taking care to never inject into a muscle or vein. Rotating injection sites will help keep one area from becoming excessively irritated.
Knowing the correct amount of medication to take is very easy and it is virtually impossible to make a mistake. The Wegovy doses come in single-use injector pens that are pre-measured and prefilled. All the patient needs to do is use one pen each week, perform their injection, and then properly dispose of the pen. Patients will receive 4 injector pens each month that are ready for use.
Adults 18+ who have a BMI (body mass index) of:
- 30+
- 27+ and have at least one secondary obesity-related condition such as Type 2 Diabetes, Severe Sleep Apnea, etc.
Prescription Wegovy medication is meant to be used while supervised by a medical professional and in conjunction with a limited-calorie diet that is accompanied by physical exercise
